Contemporary homes have clean, simple facades, with minimalist features and a timeless feel. These homes feature straight lines, spare architecture, and square or rectangle shapes with smooth edges. Contemporary décor may have some sort of geometric shape, as well as shiny, smooth surfaces. The look is sleek and monochromatic. Another style element that may be included in a contemporary home is the use of industrial-style products blended with natural ones. There may be structural elements like exposed brick walls and pipes to bring out the industrial character of the home.

The floor plan for contemporary homes is very functional with open-concept living spaces that can be used for multiple tasks and purposes. The color scheme in a contemporary home is mostly neutrals such as black, grey or white. There may be some earth tones, but they hew closely to the monochromatic scale. Some bright shades may be used sparingly for a pop of color. There tend to be glass panels and large picture windows that complement the home’s open layout and minimalist decor. These large windows help bring in tons of natural light.

Traditional homes draw from a variety of historical styles, including Colonial, Craftsman, or Neoclassical architecture. A traditional home is the most common style in the United States, mixing many classic design elements such as modest ornamentation, simple rooflines, and symmetrically spaced windows. These homes may feature porches, too. A typical traditional home includes Colonials, Georgians, Cape Cod saltboxes, or some ranches. Building materials are usually stone, wood, or brick. Distinctive, comfortable, and balanced, traditional homes borrow from the sensibilities of classic design. 

The floor plan for traditional homes tends to have spaces divided into a number of small, single-purpose rooms. When it comes to the structure, there may be curved walls and arched windows. The windows may be double-hung with grilles. These windows enhance the architecture and provide light, but artificial light fixtures are also needed. Traditional styling may include bold shapes, rich historic colors, unique details, and architectural elements. The traditional style is very welcoming.
